Feral Cat Program

Feral cats are the direct result of one human behavior: the abandonment of unaltered (not "fixed") pet cats that are left to live outdoors and breed. Feral cats are prolific breeders, often having 2-3 litters per year, of 4-6 kittens in each litter. Cats can go into heat as early as 4 1/2 months old. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates the number of feral cats in the United States to be in the tens of millions. Tragically, the lives of feral cats can be filled with suffering but statewide, Connecticut's caring citizens have significantly improved the lives of feral cats in their areas by supporting and engaging in TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return).

In the last decade, Connecticut's feral cat population has soared and the H.O.P.E. Spay/Neuter Clinic is committed to stopping the growth of feral populations through our targeted Feral Cat TNR program. Along with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the ASPCA we understand that in most situations, TNR programs are the most effective and humane method of population control of feral cats. To ensure that all citizens, rescue organizations and municipal animal control departments can humanely help end feral cat overpopulation, we offer our Feral Cat Program.

PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONS
In most cases, we work by appointment for feral cats. If you need special accommodations for a feral cat in your care, please call our clinic to discuss your needs.

All feral cats must be transported to and from our clinic in humane traps. All feral cats will be left ear-tipped, in line with standard TNR protocol - no exceptions. Feral cats must be unmanageable and arrive/leave in humane traps. Any person misrepresenting a tame cat as feral will be charged standard pricing. Traps are available for free from our clinic, deposit required.

Feral cats having surgery Monday through Thursday stay overnight and are picked up at 7:30 a.m. the following morning. Feral cats with appointments on Fridays will be picked up the same day and must be cared for in their covered humane trap, overnight, in a safe, temperate controlled room before being released 24 - 48 hours after surgery. Feral cats must be returned to their place of origin (where they live). Releasing a feral cat into a new area after surgery is inhumane.
